What's in a name Badge?
20 Oct 2012
We all have names. Yes I know a statement of the obvious. Problem is, if you're anything like me, I can't remember them. It's truly embarrassing. I'm at a social function and get introduced to a local luminary “this is ….... and they are …....”. And within a few seconds the mental delete button has been pressed and you then spend the entire conversation groping around your virtual waste paper basket looking for the deleted file. Then owing to a cock up in your filing system you blurt out the wrong name! Oh to be a hermit!
I'm not one for lobbying the government but surely it's time for a law to be passed that compels everyone to wear a name badge. This move would, in a stroke, prevent the several thousand incidents each day of crushing embarrassment as people forget the names of the persons they are conversing with. Furthermore it will stop the “ooh I know you, but where from” moment while your chatting to someone, like you've known them for years, when really you haven’t got a clue quite who they are.
Shakespeare penned “What's in a name?” Calling people by their name engenders a sense of belonging, that you are interested in them and at its most basic level it starts relationships. Businesses are beginning to understand the importance of making their staff identifiable. Why? Simple, because it starts that all important relationship. It allows the customer to address the staff member confidently and facilitates conversation. The business benefits because it's staff are accountable for their actions (or lack of them) and the customer gets a better experience and that – Holy Grail moment here – makes sales!
